What is a toy library?

Much like a normal book library, a toy library is where you can borrow toys for a period of time, then return them.

It is a great way to meet local famlies and the variety of toys can help support your child’s skill development and imagination by giving them different play experiences.

Toy libraries help children learn through play, including sharing, creativity, early literacy and numeracy skills.

It is also a sustainable, environmentally and finanically friendly way of playing, rather than buying toys at each stage of your child’s development. Save money and reduce waste by borrowing!

Our local Toy Library, Our Community

We are a volunteer-run, independent Not-For-Profit organisation where parents and carers can borrow toys, or get more involved by volunteering to be on the committee.

Benefits

Literacy and numeracy

Help parents and carers learn about the ages and stages of child development.

Community

Meet other local caregivers to share concerns, interact and make new friends.

Sharing

Show your child a greater range of play experiences, including sharing with others.

Sustainable

Save money by borrowing toys each week rather than buying.

Reduce toy waste to landfill.

How do I join the toy library?
You can sign-up for an annual membership using our form. You can also sign up in the toy library during a borrowing session. Please visit us when we are open, we would love to show you around.
Can I donate toys to the toy library?
Box Hill Area Toy Library can accept donations, but we ask that you email connect@boxhillareatoylibrary.org.au with a photo and description of the toy before dropping it off.

We do not have a lot of storage and cannot take toys that are inappropriate for our collection or duplicates of toys already in our collection.

How do I volunteer for the committee?
Without volunteers, the toy library cannot run. For more information, how to help, please visit our About page.
Are the toys clean?
Toys and their bags/boxes must be cleaned prior to return. Members will be asked upon returning all toys whether they have been cleaned. If toys are returned in an unsanitary condition, cleaning materials will be provided to members at the toy library.

Plastic and timber toys – prior to return, clean with disinfecting detergent and ensure toys are dried before replacing in bag or box.

Costumes – Wash according to instructions on label or bag.

Toy bags and boxes – prior to return, wipe bags and boxes with disinfecting detergent.

After cleaning, please check if toy numbers are visible on each item. If they are not, please re-mark using a permanent marker.

What Our Families are Saying

“We loved the sustainability aspects of the toy library. So many great toys to choose from at each age bracket, especially as they grow out of them so quickly.”
Rebecca, toy library volunteer and mother of three.
